November Newsletter

October 31st, 2019 No Comments

Dear Families,

Wow! Can October be ending already?  We hope your grandparents enjoyed the Pumpkin Picking Hayride in October-we love having our families join us.  (It was a shame we had to cancel the Halloween parade due to the weather…the kids were adorable!)

We have another special event for families coming up, and we hope you will continue to participate! Please mark your calendars for our Multicultural Family Feast, scheduled for Friday, November 22nd at 6:00 p.m.

To assure we plan accordingly, please RSVP for this event through the link to Sign Up Genius that has been emailed to all families . We want to make sure we know who is coming, so we are prepared! This will be a “Potluck” Multicultural Feast, so please consider bringing one of your favorite family dishes to share. Sign Up Genius is hosting our list of suggested items, and what people are already bringing. If you can bring anything that is still “unclaimed”, or bring a “Family Favorite or a Cultural Item”  we would love it!!  We are hoping to make this a truly multicultural feast, so, if you have a favorite dish that is not listed, please bring it! We appreciate your participation! This is a FREE event for your entire family, and you are welcome to attend whether you are able to bring anything or not.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are thankful for our Peppermint Tree families!

Sincerely,

“Miss Val”

Food Drive for Local Families in Need

Please consider donating non-perishable food items (No Glass please), please also tell your child about your donation, and allow them to place the food in the box that will be in our side hallway.  The food drive ends on November 22nd, the day of our Multicultural Feast. You may bring your donations to the feast, also (remember: no glass). Thank you for contributing to our community, and helping us to teach our children about the importance of giving to those in need.  (We donate to the Toms River non-profit organization, “Your Grandmother’s Cupboard”, that distributes food to local needy families.)

Toms River Schools are closed Mon-Friday, November 4-8.

We will NOT be holding classes on these days, however we will be providing child care. For those of you who are registered for our Peppermint Tree calendar, we are open and we will be expecting your child to attend.  If you follow the Peppermint Tree calendar, but your child will not be attending, please let us know, so we can plan accordingly.

But please be advised that every teacher does not work every holiday. We also do not use every classroom. Please prepare your child for these changes. Please use the front door for entrance in the morning.

If you follow the Toms River calendar or attend 9:00 – 11:30 (quarter day) we will not be expecting your child. But, if you need child care on these days please call the office and we can arrange to care for your child, on a space available basis. You will be billed for the care on a per day basis.

We will be CLOSED for the Thanksgiving Holiday, Thursday and Friday, November 28th & 29th. No classes or child care offered.

Enjoy yourselves!!

Our next Parent Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 11/13, at 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

We will be completing plans for the Multicultural Feast and planning more family fun events for the rest of the school year. All parents/guardians and staff are welcome to attend. There is no charge for child care during this one hour meeting. Join us! The meetings are a fun and informal way to get to know other parents and the staff.  Please RSVP for the meeting and child care by emailing: val@pepperminttree.com

Pre-K Field Trip (Mrs. Sullivan’s and Mrs. Diver’s classes) to Johnson’s Corner Farm on Wednesday, November 13th, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Please return permission slip and payment ASAP, extending deadline for any who still want to go.

The two Pre-K classes are invited to attend a field trip to Johnson’s Corner Farm to pick popcorn and sweet potatoes and learn about farming.  We are also welcoming their parents to join us on the trip to serve as extra chaperones.  Please remember to send back in your permission slip and payment.  These were due by November 1st but we will accept late responses, as the trip is not yet full.

Please send in a separate labeled item for Afternoon Snack if your child is here after 2:00 p.m. or comes to us after school.

We are finding that when we get to afternoon snack time, many children do not have anything left in their lunchboxes to eat.  We are happy to provide a snack once in a while, when a snack is forgotten, but it is getting to be a little too much for us to handle.  So, we are asking for you to please set aside a special item, and label it “Afternoon Snack”, so we can be sure it is saved.  For our Elementary School After School friends, please do the same:  please send in a snack labeled “Peppermint Tree” snack.  Thank you!

Has your child had a flu shot yet this season?

All children under the age of five MUST get a Flu shot before December 31 each school year. Please send in the updated immunization record after the shot is given.  The Ocean County Health Department inspects our records each year, so we must have the updated record for each child.

Inclement Weather

In case of snowy or icy conditions, please check for a text from us through the Remind system, or check our website announcement on the home page, or your email box for updates about school opening on these days. We also provide this information to WOBM radio “Storm Watch” program and change our outgoing phone message. We make every effort to be open, however the safety of our staff and families are our first concern. As a guideline, if The Toms River Public Schools have a delayed opening or are closed due to inclement weather, the earliest we will open is 8:30 a.m. This will give us time to get our driveway and walkways plowed, salted and sanded and determine if we will delay further or have to close for the day. There are no refunds or credits for inclement weather closings.  Toms River Schools has not built in extra snow days, so we also have not.    There is room in the calendar to extend one day at the end of the year for a snow day.  There will be no additional make-ups for snow days if there are more than one.

Fun Bus Session to begin on Thursday, December 12th – Sign up now!

Don’t forget to sign you child up for our special Winter Session of the Fun Bus -Fitness on Wheels.  Fun Bus will be here on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. starting December 12th – February 27th (with a break during the holiday week).  This is a great way to have fun while learning new skills, and get in exercise when we will be going outdoors less.  If you have any questions about the Fun Bus program, you can call them at 855-463-8628.   Sign your child up at:

www.funbuses.com/oceancounty

Parent Reminders:

  • Check backpacks daily for information from the office or your child’s teacher and art projects from your child.
  • Label everything, especially backpacks, lunch boxes, jackets and sweatshirts!
  • Please send in an extra set of clothes for the cooler weather. We play outside every day as long as it is not raining or snowing or below 32 degrees F.
  • Please download the BoxTops App onto your phone, select Peppermint Tree as your school,  and scan your Grocery Store, Target, BJ’s, and Costco  receipts.  Peppermint Tree receives funds for school materials through this program.  Thank you to parent and staff volunteer, Kristen Bernstein, for coordinating this project for us!  (This replaces the clipping of “BoxTops” from boxes and labels.  But, if you still have some of those, we are still collecting them – however they are being phased out.)
