November Newsletter

November 1st, 2017 No Comments

Dear Families,

October went by in a blur!  The children had a blast with their grandparents (or “grandparents for a day”) at the Pumpkin Picking Hayride and with their families at the Halloween Parade.  The weather was beautiful, and we were so thrilled to see so many families join us!  What a great community of families we have!

And, we have another special event for families coming up, and we hope you will continue to participate! Please mark your calendars for our Multicultural Feast, scheduled for Friday, November 17th at 6:00 p.m.

To assure we plan accordingly, please RSVP for this event either by sending back the form that was emailed to all families, or simply email me with the number of adults and children that will attend. Email me at . We want to make sure we are prepared! This will be a “Potluck” Multicultural Feast, so please consider bringing one of your favorite family dishes to share. We are also emailing a list of suggested items, and what people are already bringing. If you can bring anything that is still “blank” under “Family Bringing” please let me know and we will add you to our list.  We are hoping to make this a truly multicultural feast, so, if you have a favorite dish that is not listed, please bring it! We appreciate your participation! This is a FREE event for your entire family, and you are welcome to attend whether you are able to bring anything or not.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are thankful for our Peppermint Tree families!

Food Drive for Local Families in Need

Please consider donating non-perishable food items (No Glass please), please also tell your child about your donation, and allow them to place the food in the box that will be in our side hallway.  The food drive ends on November 17th, the day of our Multicultural Thanksgiving Feast. You may bring your donations to the feast, also (remember: no glass). Thank you for contributing to our community, and helping us to teach our children about the importance of giving to those in need.

Toms River Schools are closed Mon-Friday, November 6-10.

We will NOT be holding classes on these days, however we will be providing child care. For those of you who are registered for our Peppermint Tree calendar, we are open and we will be expecting your child to attend. But please be advised that every teacher does not work every holiday. We also do not use every classroom. Please prepare your child for these changes. Please use the front door for entrance in the morning.

If you follow the Toms River calendar or attend 9:00 – 11:30 (quarter day) we will not be expecting your child. But, if you need child care on these days please call the office and we can arrange to care for your child. You will be billed for the care on a per day basis.

We will be CLOSED for the Thanksgiving Holiday, Thursday and Friday, November 23th & 24th. No classes or child care offered.

Enjoy yourselves!!

Our next Parent Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 11/8, at 6:00 p.m.  (Yes, we are having a meeting during the week there is no school-hope you can make it!)

We will be completing plans for the feast and planning more family fun events for the rest of the school year. All parents/guardians and staff are welcome to attend. There is no charge for child care during this one hour meeting. Join us! The meetings are a fun and informal way to get to know other parents and the staff.  Please RSVP for the meeting and child care by emailing:

Special family activity – all welcome: “My Parent and Me Music & Movement” Class offered at Peppermint Tree on Saturday, 11/4/17, 10:30 a.m.  Please RSVP.

Music and movement are great for our young children. Let’s get together to share the joy of music with our kids. We will build social skills, motor skills, music appreciation, play musical instruments, sing, dance and we’ll bond with our kids and have FUN!!! Bring your infant through four year-olds.  (This is a great way to involve younger siblings who want to come to school!)  We will have a 30 minute music and movement session to enjoy together and then a 15 minute social snack time for parents and children to connect. There is a $5.00 charge per person attending. (One adult and one child is $10.00)

Space is limited.  Please email Miss Val if you would like to attend:

School Pictures have been sent home – Please return your Portraits and/or Payments by November 17th.

You are under no obligation to purchase any of the professional portrait photographs of your child sent home by Slayton Studios.  However, you do need to return the photos you are not purchasing.  Please send in payment, made out to: Slayton Studios for the pictures you decide to keep.  Return the un-purchased photos to Peppermint Tree.  You may pay by cash, check or credit card, by using the payment envelope provided with the pictures.

Please send in a separate labeled item for Afternoon Snack if your child is here after 2:00 p.m. or comes to us after school.

We are finding that when we get to afternoon snack time, many children do not have anything left in their lunchboxes to eat.  We are happy to provide a snack once in a while, when a snack is forgotten, but it is getting to be a little too much for us to handle.  So, we are asking for you to please set aside a special item, and label it “Afternoon Snack”, so we can be sure it is saved.  For our Elementary School After School friends, please do the same:  please send in a snack labeled “Peppermint Tree” snack.  Thank you!

Has your child had a flu shot yet this season?

All children under the age of five MUST get a Flu shot before December 31 each school year. Please send in the updated immunization record after the shot is given.  The Ocean County Health Department inspects our records each year, so we must have the updated record for each child.

Inclement Weather

In case of snowy or icy conditions, please check for a text from us through the Remind system, or check our website announcement on the home page, or your email box for updates about school opening on these days. We also provide this information to WOBM radio “Storm Watch” program and change our outgoing phone message. We make every effort to be open, however the safety of our staff and families are our first concern. As a guideline, if The Toms River Public Schools have a delayed opening or are closed due to inclement weather, the earliest we will open is 8:30 a.m. This will give us time to get our driveway and walkways plowed, salted and sanded and determine if we will delay further or have to close for the day. There are no refunds or credits for inclement weather closings.  We have built three snow days into our schedule this year.  Consistent with Toms River Schools’ policy, if we are closed more days than three days for inclement weather, we will offer a make up day (for up to 1 more snow day).  If we don’t use them, the three snow days built into the schedule will be taken away from the end of the school year so in total we offer 180 school days for Mon-Fri children following the Toms River Schools calendar.

Student and  Family Contact List

Our parent volunteers will be creating a family contact list for each class, so you can make play dates, etc.   We recently sent out an email with instructions.  If you did not see the email, give the office a call and we can provide them to you.

Fun Bus Session to begin on Thursday, December 7th – Sign up now!

Don’t forget to sign you child up for our special Winter Session of the Fun Bus -Fitness on Wheels.  Fun Bus will be here for ten Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. starting December 7th – February 15th (with a break during the holiday week).  This is a great way to have fun while learning new skills, and get in exercise when we will be going outdoors less.  If you have any questions about the Fun Bus program, you can call them at 609-489- 5657.   Sign your child up at:

Parent Reminders:

  • Check backpacks daily for information from the office or your child’s teacher and art projects from your child.
  • Label everything, especially backpacks, lunch boxes, jackets and sweatshirts!
  • Please send in an extra set of clothes for the cooler weather. We play outside every day as long as it is not raining or snowing or below 32 degrees F.
  • Please collect and send in “BOXTOPS for Education” (the pink squares on many grocery products).  Peppermint Tree receives funds for school materials through this program.  Thank you to parent volunteer, Kristen Bernstein, for coordinating this project for us!,
