February Newsletter

February 1st, 2015 No Comments

Dear Parents,

IT IS TIME… to register now for both Summer Camp 2015 and the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Registrations for Fall 2015 are now flowing into the office from current families and we will be opening up registration to the public as of February 2nd.   Once we open to the public, we can no longer guarantee your child a place until we receive your registration and fee.  It is first come first serve, and space is limited.

Please fill out your child’s registration form either on paper & hand in to your child’s teacher, or on-line at our website: https://www.pepperminttree.com/registration/, and send in the $75.00 family registration fee as soon as possible if you would like to reserve a spot for your child at Peppermint Tree next Fall. Space is saved on a first come, first reserved basis.  This includes registration for Full Day or Extended Day Kindergarten, as well as our Early Learners Preschool starting at 2 years of age, our Preschool class (3 years), Pre-K class (4 years) and our Before and After Elementary School programs for East Dover and Cedar Grove Schools.

And, we are now open for in house priority registration for Summer Camp 2015!

In-House priority registration will be held February 1st – 15th, and then we will open registration for camp to the public as of February 16th.

Please note:  We are extending our tuition rates from 2014 for all those who register for school and camp by April 1, 2015.    Tuition rates and the registration fee will be going up after that date.  SO…PLEASE REGISTER NOW!

As always, if you have any questions about the programs we are offering, please call (732) 929-2500.

Valerie Frost-Lewis, MS Ed.

ANNOUNCING:  Summer Camp 2015 Registration – OPENS FEBRUARY 1st for current families!

Starting February 1st we are offering priority in-house on-line registration for Summer Camp for our current Peppermint Tree families.  Registration for camp is open to current families only at this time, so we can guarantee all current families a space for camp.

The same form is used for school and camp-but we need a separate registration for your child for camp and school.  There is also a separate $75.00 registration  fee due for the school year and summer camp.

As a follow up, we will send home a paper Summer camp application over the next week or so. The Peppermint Tree Summer Camp program is available to children who are 2.5 years old through fifth grade graduates.  We are planning lots of fun trips and activities, so we hope you will join us.  Our Camp Director is Mrs. Carol Sullivan.

Summer Camp registration will be open to the public beginning 2/16/15.  Once open to the public, we can no longer guarantee a space for current families until your registration is complete.  Because of our swimming pools and active summer camp calendar, we do attract many children who attend other centers during the school year –so save a spot for your child NOW!

We are offering:

School Agers Camp:   For kids graduating 1st – 5th grades

Junior Camp:  For kids 2.5 years through Kindergarten graduates

Both camps offer plenty of choices for everyone, fun for all!

  • Enriching and entertaining visitors
  • Swimming daily in our on-site pools (weather permitting)
  • Field Trips
  • Arts & Crafts, nature, ball games
  • Scavenger hunts & more!

Join us at our next Strengthening Families Group Meeting: Wednesday, February 11, 6:00 p.m.  – 7:00 p.m. Child Care Provided

This is YOUR parents group–a monthly meeting open to all parents/guardians and staff, where we discuss what you would like us to offer to families, and to plan events for our community.  We are now working on the MARCH 27th KIDS NIGHT CLUB!!  Please come and help us plan for this fun event!

Toms River School Holiday in February: February 16

Just a reminder that we do not hold our regular classes when Toms River Schools are closed, however we do provide child care.  Those children who follow the Toms River Schools calendar with us are not expected to attend on these days.  However, if you need care, you may arrange with the office to add 2/16 to your child’s schedule on a space available basis.  Those children who follow our full Peppermint Tree Calendar will be on our list to attend on 2/16, so no need to arrange in advance for those families.

Peppermint Tree is proud to announce its participation in the National Early Childhood Education Learning Collaborative

In our continued effort to learn and offer the best education and care for young children, Peppermint Tree is very proud to be participating in the National Early Learning Collaborative. Through this program, our staff is receiving training and support to educate our children about healthy habits (like eating nutritious foods and getting exercise), and to encourage them to be physically active throughout the day. We will be sharing information with our parents as we learn, too, so we all can support our kids in living in good health!  For more information on this national initiative, go to:

Coming Soon to the Children of The Peppermint Tree – A fabulous addition to our curriculum – A special program on “Mindfulness”

Mindfulness is the skill of paying attention to the present moment; fun activities will be presented that focus on helping children manage their attention, impulse control, in-class participation, and empathy.  Peppermint Tree students in the Preschool through Kindergarten classes will be participating in this program.  (Our Early Learners are a bit too young to benefit from this program.)  More details on the program and the schedule will follow.

This program will be brought to us by an expert in teaching mindfulness to young children from The Children’s Home Society (CHS), through a grant from Helping Others Grow.   We are thrilled to have been chosen by Helping Others Grow as the recipient of this grant to benefit our students.

There is no additional cost for your child to participate, however, you must complete the CHS permission packet in order for your child to participate.  Most families did complete these earlier in the year.  Please watch your mail for a packet sent from CHS – going out to those families with children in these classrooms who have not yet completed the packet.  Please complete and return so your child can participate in the Mindfulness curriculum activities.

In addition, I wanted to let you know that CHS’ Amanda Graham has been assisting us in all four of the classrooms each week, working with our children and supporting our staff.  She provides help with behavior modification, as needed, and adding to our nurturing of our young children.  Again, her work with our children and staff is through a generous grant from the non-profit organization, Helping Others Grow.

Valentines at Peppermint Tree

Your teacher may send out a separate notice about special activities in each classroom, however, as a rule, at Peppermint Tree we would like to ask:   If you are sending in Valentines cards or treats for children in your child’s class-please do not address them to any specific child.  They can certainly say who it is “From” -but please leave the “To” field (and the outside of the envelope) blank.  This will make them easier to distribute, and we can assure no child is left out.    Thanks!

Mrs. Hamilton’s Class – Parents Invited for Valentines Event, Friday, Feb 13th at 10:00 a.m.

Watch your child’s backpack for details, if your child is in our preschool class with Mrs. Hamilton.

Dental Hygienist to visit Thurs & Fri  February 26 & 27 at 9:30 a.m.

To assist in teaching the children about proper care of their teeth, we will have a dental hygienist visit to provide the children with a fun and interactive presentation about how to take care of their teeth.  Proper brushing and nutrition will be discussed.  If your child does not attend on a Thursday or Friday, and you would like your child to see this presentation, please call the office so we an arrange a no cost drop in for your child to see the hygienist’s presentation.

 Winter Weather Reminder

If the Toms River schools are closed due to snow, our children who follow the TR calendar DO NOT HAVE SCHOOL.  We will announce our delays and closings on our website www.pepperminttree.com, our phone message, and on njstormwatch.com (which is a service of WOBM and other media outlets.)  We will also send an email message to families and staff.

If Toms River Schools have a delayed opening or are closed, we will automatically have an 8:30 opening at the earliest (and not 7:00 a.m.).  This will allow the street plowing and sanding to occur before our staff and families hit the road for the morning.  This will also give us time to assess the weather and road conditions to determine if we can open or if we will have to close for the day.

Boxtops for Education and Square1 Art

Boxtops for Education:  Please keep collecting and turning in to your child’s teacher the pink “Box Tops for Education” from grocery items.  We received a check from boxtops for $293.48!!  We were able to fund our recent “Love Rocks” event (fabric, glue, brushes and rocks)  with these funds, and we also purchased two items to support our health and nutrition curriculum:  A nutrition activity kit, which includes baskets and play fruit and vegetables in all colors, and many activity ideas for using these items to teach the children about healthy eating.  We also purchased a set of six child size water pitchers to assist the children in helping themselves to a drink of water at all times.

Square1 Art:  Back by popular demand, we will be participating with Square1 Art once again.  This is an opportunity for you to memorialize your child’s artwork.  Children will be creating art in February, and in March you will have the opportunity to order items with your child’s art printed on them.  All purchases also benefit the children of The Peppermint Tree: as proceeds are used to fund new materials and engaging activities for the children.  To get a sneak peel at what this is is all about, visit their website at: https://square1art.com/

Parent Reminders:

  • Label all pieces of clothing,  backpacks and lunch boxes.
  • Once the snow melts and it is 32 degrees or warmer we will resume outdoor play time.  Please be sure your child has a warm coat, mittens and a hat so they stay warm.
  • Don’t forget to collect and send in “BoxTops for Education”.  Thank you!
